D1 Scholarship vs. NCSA: What Parents Should Know Before Choosing a Recruiting Service

June 10, 20269 min read

If you're researching recruiting services for your athlete, there's a good chance you've come across NCSA.

They're the biggest player in the recruiting space and have been around for a long time.

But parents often ask us:

"What's the difference between D1 Scholarship and NCSA?"

That's a fair question.

But before we compare the two directly, I think it's more important to first talk about something bigger:

What should parents actually look for before choosing any recruiting service?

Because not all recruiting services operate the same way.

And understanding those differences can save families an enormous amount of time, money, and frustration.

Why Families Hire Recruiting Services in the First Place

At the end of the day, there are usually four reasons someone hires a recruiting service.

1. They Want Better Results

This is the obvious one.

Families hire recruiting services because they believe the service can help them achieve results they may not be able to achieve on their own.

That could mean:

  • More coach responses

  • More exposure

  • More scholarship opportunities

  • Better-fit schools

  • Faster recruiting momentum

The entire point is gaining an advantage.

2. They Want to Save Time

Recruiting takes a lot of time.

Researching schools.

Finding coach contact information.

Building videos.

Sending emails.

Following up.

Posting on social media.

Most families are already extremely busy.

A recruiting service can accelerate progress and reduce the amount of time families spend figuring everything out themselves.

3. They Want to Save Effort

This is different from time.

Many families simply do not have the bandwidth to consistently execute everything required in recruiting.

Parents have jobs.

Athletes have school, homework, practices, games, and training.

A recruiting service can help ensure the work still gets done even when life gets chaotic.

4. They Want to Be More Efficient With Their Resources

This is one of the most overlooked reasons families hire recruiting services.

Many families spend massive amounts of money on:

  • Showcases

  • Camps

  • Flights

  • Hotels

  • Rental cars

  • Gas

  • Food

  • Tournament travel

Over the course of an athlete's recruiting journey, it's not uncommon for families to spend $10,000–$15,000 or more.

If a recruiting service can help the athlete generate better opportunities while reducing unnecessary travel and events, the family may actually save money overall.

Instead of spending inefficiently, they're reallocating resources toward a more strategic process.

Not All Recruiting Services Operate the Same Way

One mistake families make is assuming all recruiting services work similarly.

They don't.

Some services only offer small standalone services like:

  • Video editing

  • Recruiting profiles

  • Single consulting calls

Others use a coaching model where they guide the family through the process, but the family still does most of the work.

Others are heavily done-for-you and handle much of the execution themselves.

Then there are hybrid models that combine coaching and done-for-you support.

The right fit depends on:

  • The athlete's goals

  • The family's budget

  • How much help the family needs

  • How much time the family has

  • How capable they are of executing on their own

Budgets can vary dramatically too.

Some services cost a couple hundred dollars.

Others cost several thousand.

And some premium done-for-you services cost significantly more.

What Parents Should Look for in a Recruiting Service

There are a few things families should absolutely evaluate before choosing who to work with.

1. Quantity of Results

The first thing you should look at is how many actual families the service has helped.

Not:

"We've talked to thousands of athletes."

Not:

"We've done consulting calls."

Actual recruiting results.

If someone has only helped three athletes through the recruiting process, that's not a strong sample size.

Those athletes may have simply been extremely talented.

Or gotten lucky.

But when a service has helped:

  • 50 families

  • 100 families

  • 500 families

  • 1,000+ families

That's when patterns start becoming meaningful.

At that point, you know the process works across:

  • Different sports

  • Different demographics

  • Different talent levels

  • Different academic situations

  • Different family backgrounds

That's much more powerful than sport-specific knowledge alone.

In fact, this may sound controversial, but from our experience it's often better to work with a service that has a massive quantity of proven results across many sports than a tiny service that only specializes in your sport but lacks a strong track record.

Because while recruiting has sport-specific differences, the big principles of exposure, positioning, communication, and visibility are surprisingly similar across sports.

2. Quality of Testimonials

Quantity matters.

But quality matters too.

When you visit a recruiting service's website or social media, you should be able to scroll through a massive amount of evidence.

And not just typed-out testimonials.

Typed testimonials can be manipulated.

What you really want to see is:

  • Screenshots from real families

  • Video testimonials

  • Tangible recruiting outcomes

  • Real conversations

  • Real scholarship offers

  • Real coach communication

Those are much harder to fake.

If a recruiting service has almost no screenshots, almost no video testimonials, and mostly generic written reviews, that's a red flag.

At D1 Scholarship, this is why we try to post a testimonial or success story every single day.

Most are direct screenshots sent from families.

We didn't put words in their mouths.

We didn't rewrite their message.

It's raw proof from real families.

That's also why we invest heavily into testimonial interviews.

Video testimonials are difficult to get because many families simply don't want to be on camera.

But we still prioritize them because they create transparency and trust.

3. Content and Demonstrated Expertise

We live in an era where it is incredibly easy to demonstrate expertise for free before someone ever gives you money.

That means if a recruiting service has no valuable content online, that's a problem.

Our belief is simple:

If you don't get value from someone before paying them, you probably won't get value after paying them either.

Before you ever pay a recruiting service, you should already feel like you've learned a tremendous amount from their content.

That's why at D1 Scholarship we publish hundreds of pieces of recruiting content every month.

The purpose isn't just marketing.

It's proof of expertise.

Families should be able to look at a service's content and think:

"These people clearly understand recruiting."

If the content feels generic, surface-level, or outdated, that's probably not the right fit.

So… How Is D1 Scholarship Different From NCSA?

NCSA is the largest recruiting organization in the space.

Because of that, they also receive mixed reviews.

And honestly, that's somewhat understandable.

Not because NCSA is filled with bad people.

But because they are operating at an enormous scale.

When organizations become that large, it becomes very difficult to create deeply personal relationships with every family.

That's one of the biggest differences between D1 Scholarship and NCSA.

D1 Scholarship Is Much More Hands-On

At D1 Scholarship, we are significantly more proactive with families.

For example:

NCSA often operates more reactively.

Meaning families are encouraged to reach out when they need help.

The challenge is that many families are extremely busy.

Life gets in the way.

Parents forget to follow up.

Athletes get overwhelmed.

Recruiting falls behind.

Our approach is different.

Because we work with fewer families, we're able to actively reach out and keep athletes on track.

We don't just say:

"Call us if you need something."

We proactively monitor progress, communication, exposure, and execution.

That accountability is a major difference.

D1 Scholarship Is More Personalized

Another major difference is customization.

We do not believe recruiting should be one-size-fits-all.

Strategy should change based on:

  • The athlete

  • The sport

  • Academic profile

  • Family situation

  • Budget

  • Goals

  • Recruiting level

  • Timeline

Two athletes should not necessarily run the same recruiting strategy simply because they play the same sport.

The Database Problem

Another challenge some families experience with large recruiting platforms is what we call "the database problem."

A family purchases access to a database.

They use it for a few days.

Then they get overwhelmed.

Or confused.

Or inconsistent.

And eventually the platform stops getting used.

The reality is this:

Information alone usually does not create results.

Execution does.

That's why families need to honestly assess how much support they actually need.

If you know your family struggles with consistency, accountability, or execution, it's usually better to invest in more support upfront rather than choosing the cheapest option and getting no outcome.

Why Recruiting Services Can Cost Thousands of Dollars

Some parents wonder how recruiting services can charge:

  • $3,000

  • $5,000

  • $8,000

  • $10,000+

The answer is usually tied to two things.

1. Potential Cost Savings

Again, many families already spend enormous amounts of money on travel recruiting.

If a recruiting service helps families avoid unnecessary events, wasted travel, and inefficient spending, the service may actually reduce overall recruiting costs.

2. Scholarship Outcomes

Scholarships can be worth enormous amounts of money.

We've seen athletes receive:

  • $50,000 scholarships

  • $100,000 scholarships

  • $150,000 scholarships

  • $200,000+ scholarship packages

Compared to those outcomes, the cost of a recruiting service can become relatively small.

Especially if it helps the athlete access opportunities they may not have achieved otherwise.

That's why many families are not necessarily spending extra money by hiring a recruiting service.

They're reallocating money they were already going to spend on recruiting anyway — just in a more efficient way.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, the "best" recruiting service depends on the family.

Some families only need a little guidance.

Others need accountability, strategy, and execution support.

But regardless of who you work with, families should prioritize:

  • Proven results

  • High-quality testimonials

  • Demonstrated expertise

  • Real systems

  • Personalized support

  • Accountability

Because recruiting is too important — and too expensive — to approach casually.
